Flat roof techniques for municipal buildings include, but are not limited to the following:
- Single-ply roofing: This type of roof can contain multiple layers for reinforcement and are installed in one layer. It is resistant to UV radiation and is usually installed directly over roof insulation material. Single-ply membranes can be categorized into two groups: thermosets and thermoplastics. Thermoset membranes are compounded from synthetic rubber polymers and solidify permanently after heating. Thermoplastic materials can be repeatedly softened when heated and hardened when cooled.
- Modified bitumen roofing: This is a durable, weather-resistant type of low slope roof. Modified bitumen is a type of asphalt product that can be applied in a number of ways to the roof in both hot and cold temperatures.
- Built-up roofing: This type of tar and gravel roof is built layer upon layer so that it is exceptionally resistant to water and weather. Built-up roof surfaces may include the following: Slag, Gravel, Mineral granules, Glass-fiber or mineral surfaced cap sheets, Aluminum hot asphalt mopped over the entire surface, Aluminum coatings, Elastomeric coatings
